About the Bangladesh Flag

The Bangladesh flag carries a striking simplicity: a deep red disc set slightly off-centre on a field of solid green. It is one of the more recent national flags in South Asia, born out of the country’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, and its clean geometry has changed little since. Anyone who has seen the Bangladesh flag will recognise it instantly, since few national flags rely on just two colours and two shapes to say so much.

Colours and Symbolism

Green fills almost the entire field of the Bangladesh flag and is generally read as a reference to the country’s fertile, low-lying delta landscape and its farmland. The red disc is usually explained as representing the sun rising over Bengal, and also carries a more sombre meaning, recalling the bloodshed of the Liberation War fought in 1971. Placing the disc slightly toward the hoist rather than dead centre is a deliberate design choice, intended to make the circle appear centred once the flag is flying and streaming in the wind rather than lying flat.

History of the Bangladesh Flag

A version of the Bangladesh flag was first raised in Dhaka in March 1971, during the uprising against Pakistani rule, at a time when the country’s independence had not yet been secured. That early design included a yellow map of the new nation inside the red disc. After independence was achieved later that year, the map was dropped for practical reasons, since it was difficult to reproduce accurately at smaller sizes and looked different depending on which side of the flag was showing. The simplified two-colour version, without the map, was formally adopted in January 1972 and has remained the national flag ever since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Bangladesh flag is flown year-round on government buildings and is displayed with particular prominence on Independence Day in March and Victory Day in December, both of which mark stages of the 1971 war. National flag rules set out the correct proportions, a ratio of five to three, and specify that it should be hoisted briskly and lowered slowly, never allowed to touch the ground or flown in a damaged or faded state. Half-masting is reserved for official periods of mourning declared by the government.
