About the Bulgaria Flag

The Bulgaria flag is a simple horizontal tricolour of white, green and red, arranged in three equal bands from top to bottom. It is one of the older national flags still in continuous use in the Balkans, with a colour scheme that has stayed constant since the country’s liberation in the nineteenth century even as the details around it have changed.

Colours and Symbolism

White at the top of the Bulgaria flag is generally read as a symbol of peace, love and freedom, the green band beneath it stands for the country’s agricultural wealth, and the red band at the bottom refers to the independence struggle and military courage of those who fought for Bulgarian statehood. These readings are widely taught rather than fixed by law, but they are the ones most commonly repeated in Bulgaria itself.

History of the Bulgaria Flag

The white-green-red tricolour received official status on 16 April 1879, not long after Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule. The layout echoed the horizontal tricolour used by Russia, which had backed Bulgarian independence, with green substituted for the Russian blue to give the new state its own distinct identity. A separate naval flag of the period carried a red canton bearing a yellow lion. During the communist era, from 1948 to 1990, a state emblem featuring a red star and other socialist symbols was added to the upper hoist corner of the Bulgaria flag, and the exact design of that emblem changed more than once over those four decades. The plain tricolour, without any emblem, was restored on 27 November 1990 as Bulgaria moved away from one-party rule, and that is the design flown today.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown year-round on government buildings and is raised for national holidays including Liberation Day on 3 March, which marks the end of Ottoman rule in 1878. When flown with other national flags, protocol places the Bulgaria flag according to standard rules of precedence, and it should always be hung or raised with white at the top. A wall-mounted version follows the same order as a hoisted flag, running white, green and red from top to bottom.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
