About the Burundi Flag

A white diagonal cross divides the Burundi flag into four triangular sections, two red and two green, with a white circle at the centre holding three red six-pointed stars outlined in green. It is one of the more distinctive designs in the African Great Lakes region, built around this cross-and-circle layout rather than the horizontal or vertical bands common elsewhere.

Colours and Symbolism

White on the Burundi flag stands for peace, green represents hope for the country’s development, and red commemorates the suffering endured during the struggle for independence. The three stars in the central circle are usually explained as standing for the national motto, “Unity, Work, Progress”, and are also linked by some accounts to the country’s three main population groups. The stars are outlined in green and set against the white disc, which ties the emblem visually to the four triangles surrounding it.

History of the Burundi Flag

Burundi’s first flag as an independent state, raised at independence from Belgium on 1 July 1962, carried the karyenda, a royal drum regarded in tradition as having divine authority and used to issue the mwami’s decrees. Burundi was still a kingdom at that point. After the monarchy was abolished in November 1966 and the country became a republic, the karyenda was removed from the design, since it was too closely tied to the old royal system. A revised Burundi flag, with the drum replaced by three stars in the central circle, was formally adopted in 1967, and the diagonal white cross and the red and green triangles from the original 1962 design were kept in place, so the overall shape of the flag has stayed familiar even as the central emblem changed.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown at government offices and raised for national days including Independence Day on 1 July. Because the design depends on the diagonal cross being centred and the stars sitting exactly within the central white disc, printed and sewn versions need to keep those proportions accurate for the flag to be recognisable at a distance. When flown alongside other flags, the Burundi flag follows the same basic rules of precedence and correct orientation as other national flags in the region.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
