About the Dominica Flag

The Dominica flag is one of the more distinctive national banners in the Caribbean, built around a forest-green field with a cross of three colours and a red disc bearing ten stars and a parrot found nowhere else on earth. Unlike many former British colonies that lean on a Union Flag pattern, Dominica chose a design that speaks directly to its geography and wildlife.

Colours and Symbolism

Green forms the background and stands for the island’s dense rainforest cover, still one of the most intact in the eastern Caribbean. A cross divides the field into four sections, made up of three stripes: yellow, black and white. These represent the Christian Trinity, and are also read as a nod to the island’s Carib, African and European heritage combined. At the centre sits a red disc, encircled by ten green-edged, five-pointed stars, one for each of the island’s parishes. Inside the disc is a Sisserou parrot, Dominica’s national bird and an endangered species that lives only in the island’s mountain forests.

History of the Dominica Flag

The flag was adopted on 3 November 1978, the day Dominica gained independence from Britain. It has been amended a few times since, mostly to adjust the colour and posture of the parrot rather than the overall layout. An early version showed the bird facing the hoist side; a 1981 revision turned it to face the fly, and further refinements followed in 1988 and 1990 to correct the shading of its plumage so it matched the real bird more closely. Before independence, Dominica flew a British colonial ensign, as it had done throughout its time as a Crown colony and later as an associated state within the West Indies.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Dominica marks its independence each November, and the flag is displayed widely across the island during that period, on government buildings, schools and private homes. As with most national flags, it should be flown right way up, with the parrot facing the fly rather than the hoist, and never allowed to touch the ground. Because the design is symmetrical along its cross but not along its parrot detail, it is worth checking orientation carefully before hoisting, since an upside-down or reversed Dominica flag is a common and easily avoided mistake.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
