About the Guyana Flag

Known as the Golden Arrowhead, the Guyana flag is built around a green field with a red triangle at the hoist and a long golden arrow-shaped band running most of the length of the flag, each element separated by narrow borders of black and white. It is one of the more geometrically distinctive flags in South America, and its shape gives the whole design a strong sense of forward motion.

Colours and Symbolism

Green, which covers most of the Guyana flag, represents the country’s forests and its agricultural land, both central to Guyana’s economy and landscape. The red triangle at the hoist stands for the zeal and energy involved in nation-building, while the golden arrowhead that dominates the design refers to the country’s mineral wealth, including its gold and bauxite deposits. The narrow black border around the arrowhead represents endurance, and the white border around the red triangle stands for the rivers that run through the country, most notably the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.

History of the Guyana Flag

Guyana was a British colony known as British Guiana before independence, and it flew a colonial ensign in keeping with standard British practice at the time. As the colony moved toward self-government in the 1960s, a new national flag was commissioned, and the Golden Arrowhead design was created by the American vexillologist Whitney Smith. It was adopted on 26 May 1966, the day Guyana became independent from Britain, and it has remained the national flag ever since, surviving the country’s later transition to a republic in 1970 without any change to its design.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Guyana flag is flown throughout the country on government buildings and schools, and it is raised widely around Independence Day on 26 May and Republic Day on 23 February. Its narrow black and white borders are easy to lose at small sizes, so the flag is usually reproduced at a reasonably large scale to keep its detail legible. Guyanese communities abroad, particularly in the Caribbean diaspora, fly the flag at cultural festivals and community events, and it is a familiar sight at cricket grounds whenever West Indies or Guyanese teams play.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
