About the Kazakhstan Flag

A golden sun with thirty-two rays hangs above a soaring steppe eagle on a light blue field, giving the Kazakhstan flag a striking, uncluttered design compared with many post-Soviet national flags. A narrow vertical band of traditional gold ornamentation runs along the hoist edge, adding a decorative element rooted in long-standing Kazakh craft traditions.

Colours and Symbolism

The light blue background is often linked to the vast open sky of the Kazakh steppe and to the historic Turkic reverence for the sky as a symbol of peace and unity. The golden eagle, shown in flight with wings fully outstretched, represents independence, power and the freedom of the Kazakh people, while the sun above it stands for life, abundance and lasting prosperity. Along the hoist side, the gold “koshkar-muiz” pattern, meaning ram’s horns, is a traditional Kazakh ornamental motif long used in textiles, felt rugs and decorative carving, tying the state symbol to older nomadic folk traditions that predate the modern republic by generations.

History of the Kazakhstan Flag

Kazakhstan adopted its national flag on 4 June 1992, less than a year after declaring independence from the Soviet Union in December 1991. The design is credited to artist Shaken Niyazbekov, whose sky-blue field and central eagle motif replaced the Soviet-era flag of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic almost entirely, marking a clean break from the hammer-and-sickle imagery of the previous decades. Since its adoption, the Kazakhstan flag has remained unchanged, serving as one of the more visually consistent symbols of the country’s post-Soviet identity, even as the design of the state emblem and other national symbols has been adjusted around it over the years.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Kazakhstan flag flies over government buildings, embassies and schools throughout the country and is raised for national holidays including Independence Day on 16 December. Kazakh flag law sets out specific proportions and colour standards for official use, and the flag is generally expected to be lowered and folded with care rather than left flying in poor weather. It is a common sight in Kazakh diplomatic missions abroad, including in South Africa.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
