Description

The Nicaragua flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Nicaragua Flag

The Nicaragua flag is a horizontal triband of blue, white and blue, with the national coat of arms centred on the white stripe. It descends directly from the flag of the old Federal Republic of Central America, making it one of several Central American flags that still share the same basic blue-white-blue layout.

Colours and Symbolism

The two blue stripes are usually read as representing the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines that border Nicaragua, while the white stripe between them stands for peace. At the centre, the coat of arms carries a triangle enclosing five volcanoes rising from the sea, with a rainbow above them and a Cap of Liberty at the top. The five volcanoes recall the five original states of the Central American federation, and the surrounding elements, the rising sun, the rainbow and the cap, are read together as a statement of hope and shared destiny among those states, a message the Nicaragua flag has carried since the design’s earliest days.

History of the Nicaragua Flag

The design traces back to the flag adopted by the Federal Republic of Central America on 21 August 1823, which used the same blue-white-blue triband with a central coat of arms. After the federation broke apart, Nicaragua cycled through several different flags before returning to the old federal pattern, adding elements specific to Nicaragua, in 1908. That 1908 design was not made official by law until 27 August 1971, and the Nicaragua flag has represented the country since, alongside brief periods of other symbols in wider use. It remains one of the clearest surviving links to the short-lived Central American federation.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Nicaraguans fly the Nicaragua flag on national holidays including Independence Day on 15 September, and it is displayed at government buildings, schools and sporting events throughout the year. The coat of arms at the centre carries fine detail, volcanoes, a rainbow and a cap, and correct display keeps that emblem centred on the white stripe rather than crowding it toward either blue band. The flag is often flown alongside those of Nicaragua’s Central American neighbours, a visual reminder of the shared federal design they still carry.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
