About the Syria Flag
The Syria flag in use today is a green, white and black tricolour with three red stars in the white centre band, a design with roots stretching back to the country’s independence movement in the 1930s. It replaced the red, white and black flag with two green stars that had represented Syria for most of the second half of the twentieth century. The current design carries strong historical associations with Syrian independence and, more recently, with the opposition to the government that fell in December 2024.
Colours and Symbolism
The three horizontal bands run green, white and black from top to bottom, with three red five-pointed stars set in a row across the white band. The colours are drawn from the pan-Arab palette shared with several other Arab states, broadly associated with the Arab liberation movement, Islamic and Arab dynastic history, and the struggle against colonial rule. The three stars have most often been explained as representing the union or shared heritage of Syria, Egypt and Iraq, or more generally the unity of the Syrian people, though interpretations have varied over the decades the Syria flag has been in use.
History of the Syria Flag
This green, white and black design with three red stars was first adopted around 1932, during the period of the French Mandate, and continued in use through independence in 1946 and into the 1950s. Syria set the flag aside during its short-lived union with Egypt as the United Arab Republic and again under later governments, which favoured a red, white and black flag with two green stars from 1963 onward. The green-white-black flag never disappeared, however: it was adopted by the Syrian opposition and armed groups from 2011 as a symbol distinct from the ruling government, and it was raised as the country’s official flag again after the government fell in December 2024, restoring the design used at independence.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Syria flag is flown at government buildings, border crossings and diplomatic missions, and has become a common sight at public gatherings since the change of government. As with any tricolour, care is taken to keep the stripes in the correct order and the three stars evenly spaced and upright in the white band. Given the flag’s long and layered history, many Syrians attach personal and political significance to it beyond its formal role as a state symbol.
