The flag of Azerbaijan is a striking horizontal tricolour of three equally sized bands — bright blue on top, red in the middle, and green at the bottom. Centred on the red band are a white crescent and a white eight-pointed star, making it one of the most recognisable flags in the Caucasus region.

About the Azerbaijan Flag

The Azerbaijani tricolour has a powerful history. The original design was first adopted on 9 November 1918 by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic — making it one of the earliest democratic republics in the Muslim world. After decades of Soviet rule, the flag was officially restored on 5 February 1991 following Azerbaijan's independence. Today, 9 November is celebrated as State Flag Day across the country. The flag's three bands each carry deep meaning, rooted in the vision of "Turkic sovereignty, Islamic culture, and modern European power" as described by Mammad Amin Rasulzade,

chairman of the Azerbaijani National Council:

– Bright Blue — Represents Azerbaijan's Turkic identity and heritage, honouring the country's deep roots in the Turkic world.

– Red: Symbolises progress, modernisation, and the development of democracy. It reflects Azerbaijan's aspiration to build a forward-looking, modern state.

– Green: Represents Islam, specifically Shia Islam, which is the majority religion in Azerbaijan.

– White Crescent: Signifies the nation's commitment to its Islamic faith and traditions.

– White Eight-Pointed Star: Its meaning is richly debated. One interpretation,

suggested by Fatali Khan Khoyski, is that the eight points represent the eight letters in the word "Azerbaijan" (آذربایجان) when written in Arabic script. Another holds that the points stand for the eight branches of the Turkic peoples.

The flag's proportion is 1:2 (width to length), and its colours were officially standardised in 2013. During the Soviet era (1920–1991), the tricolour was banned but was secretly preserved by the Azerbaijani people, re-emerging powerfully during the independence demonstrations of the late 1980s.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
