About the Bahamas Flag

The national flag of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas was adopted on 10 July 1973 — the very day the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. It was first hoisted at midnight during the independence celebrations, marking the birth of a new nation.

The flag was designed by Hervis Bain, whose work incorporated the best elements from a national design contest held in the lead-up to independence.

The flag has a proportion of 1:2 and every element carries powerful symbolism:

– Aquamarine Bands — Represent the stunning turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea that surround the archipelago's more than 700 islands.

– Gold/Yellow Band — Symbolises the shining Bahamian sun, the golden sand beaches and the rich land-based natural resources of the islands.

– Black Triangle — Represents the strength, vigour, and force of the Bahamian people. Pointing towards the gold and aquamarine bands, the triangle evokes the enterprising and determined nature of Bahamians to develop and harness their country's abundant

natural resources on both land and sea.

Before independence, The Bahamas flew the British Blue Ensign bearing a colonial emblem that depicted a British ship pursuing pirate vessels, with the Latin motto "Expulsis piratis restituta commercia"

— meaning "Pirates expelled, commerce restored. "

The 1973 flag replaced this colonial past with a design that celebrates the people, landscape, and future of the islands. The Bahamas is an archipelago nation in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Cuba, with its capital in Nassau. As a Commonwealth realm, it remains part of the broader Commonwealth of Nations.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
