Belarus Flag
The flag of Belarus is a distinctive red and green bicolour featuring a traditional Belarusian ornament pattern in red on a white background at the hoist. The broad red upper band covers two-thirds of the flag's height, while the green lower band occupies the remaining third. The vertical ornament — inspired by local plants and flowers — makes the Belarus flag one of the most unique national flags in the world.
Our Belarus flags are made from strong, weather-resistant 100% polyester bunting, built to hold up well in a variety of outdoor conditions. Each flag comes fitted with rope and toggle, making it ready for hoisting the moment it arrives. Available in two sizes:
-90 x 60cm — ideal for smaller displays, indoor settings, or personal use
-180 x 120cm — perfect for outdoor flagpoles, events, and official displays
Whether you need the Belarus flag for a diplomatic event, embassy display, cultural celebration,
or educational setting, Flags Online delivers quality flags across South Africa.
About the Belarus Flag
The national flag of the Republic of Belarus is an unequal bicolour of red and green with a vertical red-on-white ornament pattern placed at the hoist (staff) end. The flag has a proportion of 1:2 (width to length), with the ornament occupying one-ninth of the flag's total length.
The current design was introduced on 10 February 2012, featuring a thicker ornament pattern than the previous version. The post-Soviet flag was first adopted on 7 June 1995, following a national referendum held on 14 May 1995 in which 75.1% of voters approved the new state symbols.
Every element of the Belarusian flag carries deep national significance:
– Red Band (upper two-thirds) — Represents freedom, the sacrifice of the nation's
forefathers, power, courage, honour, and energy. It also recalls Belarus' past struggles against oppression.
– Green Band (lower one-third) — Symbolises life, hope, health, youth, rejuvenation, diligence, creation, and the natural harmony of Belarus' vast forests.
– Red-on-White Ornament Pattern — A traditional Belarusian decorative design
originally created in 1917 by Matrona Markevich. The pattern is derived from local plants and flowers and represents the type of weaving traditionally found on the ruchnik — a ceremonial woven cloth used at weddings and other important events in Belarusian culture. The white background symbolises purity and traditional Belarusian identity.
The flag's design has its roots in the 1951 flag of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Byelorussian SSR). When Belarus adopted its current flag in 1995, the communist symbols — the hammer and sickle and the red star — were removed, and the colours of the ornament pattern were reversed from white-on-red to red-on-white, creating a distinctly post-Soviet national identity while preserving the cultural heritage of the ornament design.
Interestingly, the name "Belarus" translates to "White Russia, " and the country's earliest known flag was plain white. Today's flag retains that connection to whiteness through the ornament's white background while embracing the bold red and green that represent the nation's spirit and landscape.
Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, with its capital in Minsk. It is one of the founding members of the United Nations and celebrates its Day of the National Emblem and Flag annually.

We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.
