About the Bhutan Flag

A dragon dominates the Bhutan flag, coiled across a diagonal line that splits the field into golden yellow above and deep orange below. Known in Dzongkha as Druk, the Thunder Dragon, the creature gives the country its own name, Druk Yul, “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, making the Bhutan flag one of the few national flags built directly around the country’s own name for itself.

Colours and Symbolism

The diagonal split on the Bhutan flag divides it into two triangles of unequal but related meaning. The yellow upper triangle represents the civil and secular authority of the King of Bhutan, while the orange, sometimes described as saffron, lower triangle represents the Buddhist religious tradition, particularly the Drukpa Kagyu school that has shaped Bhutanese spiritual life for centuries. The white dragon stretched across both halves stands for purity and for the equal, balanced status of temporal and religious power, and the jewels clutched in each of its claws represent the country’s wealth and prosperity.

History of the Bhutan Flag

Earlier versions of the Bhutan flag existed from around the middle of the twentieth century, but the design was not fixed in its current proportions and detail until later standardisation. The dragon, drawn from centuries-old Bhutanese iconography and closely tied to the country’s founding Buddhist traditions, has always been the flag’s central feature, even as the exact rendering of its colour, posture and surrounding field was refined over the decades. The diagonal division into yellow and orange fields has remained constant throughout these changes, even as Bhutan itself moved from absolute monarchy toward the constitutional, democratic system it has today.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Bhutan flag is flown at government offices, monasteries and schools throughout the country and is treated with particular care given its close association with both the monarchy and Buddhist practice. Bhutanese custom generally calls for the flag to be handled respectfully and never allowed to touch the ground, in keeping with the broader treatment of sacred and royal symbols in Bhutanese culture. It is a familiar sight during national celebrations such as the King’s Birthday and National Day each December, and visitors to Bhutan will also see it painted or carved into buildings, alongside strings of Buddhist prayer flags that are a separate tradition entirely.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
