Bavaria Flag

The flag of Bavaria is one of the most recognisable regional flags in the world, featuring the

iconic white and blue colour scheme that has become synonymous with Bavarian culture.

Bavaria has two equally official flag designs — a horizontal striped version (white over blue) and

the famous lozenge (diamond) pattern of white and blue lozenges. Both versions are deeply

rooted in the heritage of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria for over seven centuries.

Our Bavaria flags are made from strong, weather-resistant 100% polyester bunting, built to hold

up well in a variety of outdoor conditions. Each flag comes fitted with rope and toggle, making it

ready for hoisting the moment it arrives. Available in two sizes:

90 x 60cm — ideal for smaller displays, indoor settings, or personal use

180 x 120cm — perfect for outdoor flagpoles, events, and official displays

Whether you need the Bavaria flag for an Oktoberfest celebration, a German cultural event, a beer garden display, or an educational setting, Flags Online delivers quality flags across South

Africa.

About the Bavaria Flag

The Free State of Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern) — Germany's largest state by area, with its capital

in Munich — has two equally official state flags, both in white and blue. In Bavarian tradition, the

colours are always described as "white and blue" (never "blue and white"), as enshrined in the

Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria.

The Striped Flag features horizontal bands of white (on top) and blue. It is the simpler of the

two designs and is widely used in official and civil contexts.

The Lozenge Flag features the world-famous diamond pattern of alternating white and blue

lozenges. By regulation, the flag must contain at least 21 lozenges, and the top corner nearest

the flagpole must always be a white (or partially white) lozenge. This is the version most closely

associated with Bavarian identity internationally — instantly recognised at Oktoberfest

celebrations, beer gardens, and cultural festivals around the world.

The origins of the blue and white lozenges trace back to 1242, when Duke Otto II of Bavaria

inherited the County of Bogen on the Danube and adopted the Bogen family's lozenge coat of

arms. The pattern became the heraldic symbol of the royal Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled

Bavaria from 1180 to 1918, and eventually came to represent all of Bavaria.

The meaning of the colours is poetically referenced in the Bavarian anthem: "die Farben Seines

Himmels, Weiß und Blau" – "the colours of His sky, white and blue. " The blue is widely

interpreted as representing Bavaria's lakes, rivers, and skies, while the white symbolises purity

and the clouds above the Alpine landscape.

The Bavarian flag has a rich and turbulent history:

– 1180–1918 — The Wittelsbach dynasty ruled Bavaria with the blue and white lozenges

as their heraldic arms.

– 1806–1918 — The Kingdom of Bavaria used the striped flag.

– 1933–1945 — The Bavarian flag was suppressed during the Nazi era.

– 1949–present — Both the lozenge and striped flags were restored as equally official

state flags under the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Bavarian blue and white pattern has also inspired some of the world's most famous logos,

including BMW and FC Bayern Munich.
