About the Bolivia Flag

Red, yellow and green run in three even horizontal bands across the Bolivia flag, a colour combination shared with several other Latin American nations but arranged here in an order unique to Bolivia. On official versions the country’s coat of arms sits within the yellow band, while a plainer civil version omits it, a distinction that trips up many people trying to reproduce the Bolivia flag from memory.

Colours and Symbolism

Red, at the top of the Bolivia flag, is generally connected with the courage of the Bolivian army and the bloodshed of the wars fought for independence and territorial defence. Yellow, in the centre, refers to the country’s mineral wealth, particularly the silver and tin that have driven large parts of the Bolivian economy since colonial times. Green, at the bottom, stands for the fertility of the land and its agricultural and forest resources. On the state version, the central coat of arms adds further national symbols, including mountains, a llama and a sun.

History of the Bolivia Flag

Bolivia adopted its first national flag not long after declaring independence from Spain in 1825, and the colours and layout were confirmed by law in 1851, establishing the red, yellow and green horizontal bands still used today. The coat of arms at the centre of the state flag has been revised at various points since, most notably in 1888, without altering the underlying three-band design. Since 2009, Bolivia has also recognised the Wiphala, a chequered flag representing the country’s indigenous peoples, as a second official flag flown alongside the tricolour rather than in place of it.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Bolivia flag is flown at government buildings throughout the country, usually in its state version bearing the coat of arms, and is a central feature of celebrations on Independence Day each August. Where the Wiphala is also flown, the two flags are typically displayed together rather than as alternatives, reflecting Bolivia’s recognition of both its republican and indigenous heritage. As with most national flags, the Bolivia flag should be flown right side up and kept in good condition when displayed publicly.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
