About the Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag

A yellow triangle set against deep blue, its edge lined with white stars, gives the Bosnia and Herzegovina flag a spare, modern look quite different from the flags used in the region before it. Unlike many national flags, this one was not chosen by the country itself in the ordinary way; it was introduced by international mediators during a period of intense political difficulty following the Bosnian War, and it has stayed in place ever since.

Colours and Symbolism

The yellow triangle on the Bosnia and Herzegovina flag is generally understood to represent the shape of the country’s territory, while the blue field and white stars were chosen partly to echo the flag of the European Union, signalling the country’s stated ambition of eventual membership. The stars are deliberately cut off at the top and bottom edges of the flag rather than fully enclosed, a detail meant to suggest that they continue indefinitely, without a fixed or final number.

History of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Flag

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first post-independence flag, adopted in 1992, used a white field with a blue shield and gold fleur-de-lis, a design linked to the medieval Bosnian kingdom. That flag became closely associated with one side in the war that followed the country’s break from Yugoslavia, and after the 1995 Dayton Agreement ended the fighting, the country’s institutions struggled to agree on a genuinely neutral replacement. In 1998, the international High Representative overseeing the peace process imposed the current design by decree, seeking a flag with no ethnic or historical association that could be shared equally by all of the country’s communities. That 1998 design remains the Bosnia and Herzegovina flag in use today.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina flag is flown at government institutions across the country and at Bosnian diplomatic missions abroad, and it appears alongside cantonal and entity flags in many public settings, reflecting the country’s layered system of government. Because the flag was designed to be neutral among Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constituent peoples, it is generally displayed in official rather than informal contexts, with the entities and cantons more often flying their own separate flags at a local level.
