About the Burkina Faso Flag
Two broad horizontal bands, red above green, fill most of the Burkina Faso flag, with a single five-pointed yellow star sitting at the centre where the two colours meet. It is a plain, strongly geometric design without any further emblem or crest, in keeping with several other flags adopted across West Africa in the twentieth century.
Colours and Symbolism
Red on the Burkina Faso flag is said to represent the revolutionary struggle that reshaped the country’s politics in the early 1980s, while green stands for the abundance of the country’s agricultural and natural resources. The yellow star at the centre is described as the guiding light of the revolution, sitting exactly on the boundary between the two colour bands rather than favouring either one.
History of the Burkina Faso Flag
Before 1984 the country was known as Upper Volta and flew a black, white and red tricolour, the three colours taken from the Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta rivers that run through the country. Following the 1983 revolution led by Thomas Sankara, the country was renamed Burkina Faso, meaning roughly “land of upright people”, and a new flag was adopted on 4 August 1984 to mark the change. The Burkina Faso flag replaced the old river-tricolour entirely rather than adapting it, giving the new government a clean break from the previous republic. The red-green-star design has remained unchanged since that adoption, surviving subsequent changes of government and continuing as the flag of the country today.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The flag is flown at government buildings and displayed at public events including the anniversary of the 1983 revolution. As with most West African flags of similar layout, reproducing the Burkina Faso flag correctly means keeping the star centred exactly on the boundary between the red and green bands rather than shifting it toward either colour, since its position is part of the official specification. Correct orientation places red at the top and green at the bottom, whether the flag is flown from a pole or displayed flat against a wall. Because the design uses only two colours and a single star, any distortion in the proportions is easily noticed, so quality manufacture matters more than it might for a busier flag.

Order Lead Times
Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.
One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.
Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
