Description

The Chechenia flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Chechenia Flag

The Chechenia flag, formally the flag of the Chechen Republic, is a horizontal bicolour of green over a narrower red band, with a white vertical stripe running along the hoist carrying a gold Chechen ornamental pattern. It is used as the flag of the Chechen Republic, a federal subject within the Russian Federation, and its layout differs from the flag used by the unrecognised Chechen Republic of Ichkeria during the 1990s.

Colours and Symbolism

On the current Chechenia flag, green is associated with Islam, the majority religion in the region, white with peace and with the Caucasus Mountains that dominate the landscape, and red with the bloodshed endured through a difficult modern history. The gold ornament on the white hoist stripe is drawn from traditional Chechen decorative pattern-work, distinguishing the flag from a plain bicolour and linking it to older textile and craft traditions from the region.

History of the Chechenia Flag

Chechnya’s flags have changed more than once over the past century, reflecting shifts in the region’s political status. During the early 1990s, following the declaration of the unrecognised Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, a predominantly green flag associated with that administration was flown, carrying a wolf beneath a crescent and stars along with narrow decorative stripes, and it remained in use among supporters of the breakaway republic through the conflicts of the following decade. After Chechnya’s reintegration into the Russian Federation’s administrative structure, a new flag for the Chechen Republic was formally adopted on 22 June 2004 as a federal subject flag, using the green-over-red layout and hoist-side ornament described above. This is the version most commonly reproduced today under the name Chechenia flag, and it is the flag recognised in Russian federal law as the region’s official one.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Within the Chechen Republic, the flag is flown at government buildings alongside the flag of the Russian Federation, consistent with its status as a federal subject rather than an independent state. As with other regional flags used within a larger federation, correct display generally places the national flag of the country in the senior position when flown together with the Chechenia flag. Buyers researching this flag should be aware that older sources and older printed flags may reflect the earlier 1990s Ichkeria design rather than the tricolour-based flag in current official use.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
