About the Comoros Flag

The Comoros flag is a green triangle at the hoist laid over four horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red and blue, with a white crescent moon and four white stars set inside the triangle. It is the national flag of the Union of the Comoros, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the East African coast. The current design has been in use since the country’s 2001 constitution reorganised the islands into a federal union.

Colours and Symbolism

Each of the four stripes on the Comoros flag, and each of the four stars, stands for one of the main islands of the archipelago: Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan and Mayotte, the last of which remains under French administration but is still claimed by Comoros. The green triangle and the white crescent are traditional symbols of Islam, the country’s dominant religion and a strong marker of national identity. Together the crescent and stars form a design that has appeared on nearly every flag Comoros has flown since independence, even as the surrounding stripes have changed.

History of the Comoros Flag

Comoros became independent from France in 1975, and its flag has been redesigned several times since, reflecting political change on the islands. Between 1996 and 2001 the flag was a plain green field bearing the white crescent and four stars. After a new constitution created the Union of the Comoros in 2001, granting each island greater autonomy, the flag was redesigned to give each island its own coloured stripe, producing the four-band version flown today. The crescent and stars have remained constant through every version.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Comoros flag is flown at government buildings, ports and airports throughout the islands, and is raised for national holidays including Independence Day on 6 July. Because the flag encodes each island’s identity within the stripes, it is treated as a symbol of the union between Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan, and of the country’s continuing claim to Mayotte. Displaying it correctly means keeping the green triangle at the hoist with the crescent opening toward the fly, in line with how the design is officially registered.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
