Description

The Congo (Republic) flag is available from Flags Online in 90 x 60cm and 180 x 120cm, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Congo (Republic) Flag

The Congo (Republic) flag is split diagonally by a yellow band running from the lower hoist corner to the upper fly corner, with green filling the upper triangle and red filling the lower one. It is the flag of the Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, and should not be confused with the flag of its larger neighbour, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The diagonal design gives it a distinctive look among African national flags, most of which use horizontal or vertical stripes.

Colours and Symbolism

Green represents the country’s forests and the hope placed in the future after independence. Yellow, running through the centre of the Congo (Republic) flag as a diagonal band, stands for friendship and the nobility of the Congolese people. Red recalls the struggle for independence and the sacrifices made along the way. The diagonal arrangement, rather than plain stripes, was intended to set the flag apart visually while keeping the same three colours used by several other former French territories in the region.

History of the Congo (Republic) Flag

This flag was first adopted in 1959, the year before the Republic of the Congo gained full independence from France in 1960. It was replaced in 1970 when the country became the People’s Republic of the Congo under a Marxist-Leninist government, adopting a red flag bearing a national emblem in the style used by other socialist states of the period. When that government fell and multi-party rule returned in 1991, the original green, yellow and red diagonal design was restored and has represented the country ever since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Congo (Republic) flag is flown at government buildings in Brazzaville and other cities, and raised for national occasions including Independence Day on 15 August. Because the design is similar in colour, though not in layout, to flags used elsewhere in Francophone Africa, care is often taken to display it correctly with the yellow diagonal running from lower hoist to upper fly, rather than reversed. It is treated with the same formal respect given to other national flags at official ceremonies and sporting events.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
