About the Croatia Flag

The Croatia flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and blue, with the Croatian coat of arms placed slightly toward the hoist at the centre. That coat of arms is a red and white checkerboard shield, topped by a crown made up of five smaller shields representing Croatia’s historic regions. The tricolour follows the Pan-Slavic colour scheme shared with several other Slavic nations, while the checkerboard shield is a symbol specific to Croatia, appearing in the country’s heraldry for centuries.

Colours and Symbolism

Red, white and blue reflect the wider Pan-Slavic colour tradition adopted across Central and Eastern Europe during the nineteenth century. What sets the Croatia flag apart is the checkerboard emblem, known locally as the šahovnica, which begins with a white square in the upper left corner. Above the shield sits a stylised crown formed from five smaller shields, representing the historic regions of Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia. This arrangement ties the modern flag to symbols used by Croatian rulers and nobility long before the current state existed.

History of the Croatia Flag

The red, white and blue tricolour was first raised by Croatian nationalists in 1848, without any central emblem, during a period of growing national feeling across the Habsburg lands. Versions of the flag carrying a red star, rather than the checkerboard, were used while Croatia formed part of socialist Yugoslavia after the Second World War. Following Croatia’s declaration of independence, the current Croatia flag bearing the coat of arms was formally adopted on 21 December 1990, and it has represented the country through the years of war that followed and into its present independence.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Croatia flag is flown at government buildings, schools and ports throughout the country, and is raised for national holidays including Statehood Day. It is a familiar sight at football and handball matches, where Croatian supporters display it prominently during major tournaments. As with most national flags bearing a central emblem, care is taken to fly it the right way up, with the crown of shields sitting above rather than below the checkerboard, and the whole coat of arms kept close to the hoist rather than centred.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
