About the Cuba Flag

The Cuba flag, often called La Estrella Solitaria or the Lone Star flag, is made up of five alternating stripes of blue and white with a red triangle at the hoist bearing a single white five-pointed star. It is one of the older national flag designs still in use in the Americas, predating Cuban independence by more than fifty years. The flag was designed by exiles working for Cuban independence from Spain, long before the country achieved that goal.

Colours and Symbolism

The three blue stripes on the Cuba flag are usually said to represent the three original military departments into which colonial Cuba was divided, while the two white stripes stand for the purity of the independence cause. The red triangle recalls the blood shed in the fight for freedom, and is also linked to the values of equality, fraternity and liberty. The white star at its centre, the Lone Star that gives the flag its nickname, represents Cuban independence and was intended to place Cuba among the free nations of the world.

History of the Cuba Flag

The design dates to 1849, created by Cuban revolutionary Narciso López with the support of fellow exiles working toward independence from Spain. It was flown briefly during an uprising in 1850 before being suppressed by Spanish authorities. The flag reappeared during Cuba’s wars of independence in the later nineteenth century and was formally adopted as the national flag in 1902, when Cuba became an independent republic. It has remained unchanged through the republic, the 1959 revolution and the decades of government since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Cuba flag is flown at government buildings across the island and raised for national days including Independence Day on 20 May, marking the start of the republic in 1902, and Revolution Day on 26 July. It is a common sight in Cuban communities abroad as well, where it carries strong associations with national identity regardless of political affiliation. Correct display places the red triangle and its star at the hoist, with the five stripes running horizontally toward the fly.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
