About the Curacao Flag

The Curacao flag is a blue field crossed by a horizontal yellow stripe set slightly below the centre, with two white five-pointed stars placed diagonally in the upper hoist area. It is the flag of Curaçao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean, and has represented the island since well before it gained its current constitutional status in 2010. The design is simple, but each element carries a specific meaning tied to the island’s geography and people.

Colours and Symbolism

On the Curacao flag, the blue field is divided by the yellow stripe into a darker blue above, representing the sky, and a lighter blue below, representing the sea, with the yellow band standing for sunshine. The two white stars refer to Curaçao and the small uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao that lies off its southeastern coast, though they are also read more broadly as symbols of love and happiness. Each star has five points, said to represent the five continents from which the island’s population traces its ancestry, and the design has come to stand for the island as a whole, both at home and among Curaçaoans living abroad.

History of the Curacao Flag

Curaçao’s flag was adopted on 2 July 1984, while the island was still part of the Netherlands Antilles, a federation of Dutch Caribbean territories that also included Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten. When the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved in 2010 and Curaçao became a separate constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the existing flag was retained rather than replaced, giving it continuity across a significant change in the island’s constitutional standing and how it is governed today.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Curacao flag is flown at government buildings in Willemstad and across the island, and is raised for national occasions including Curaçao Day on 2 July, which also marks the anniversary of the flag’s adoption. It flies alongside the Dutch flag on buildings connected to the Kingdom government, reflecting the island’s status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Correct display keeps the two stars in the upper hoist corner, with the yellow stripe running horizontally below the midpoint of the flag, well clear of the stars themselves.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
