Description

The Dominican Republic flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Dominican Republic Flag

The Dominican Republic flag is unusual among national banners in that it carries a white cross running to every edge, dividing the field into four rectangles of alternating blue and red. Look closer and there’s more: a coat of arms sits at the centre, making this the only national flag in the world to depict an open Bible.

Colours and Symbolism

Blue is generally read as a symbol of liberty, red for the blood shed by those who fought for independence, and the white cross for the sacrifice and faith of the independence movement known as La Trinitaria. The coat of arms at the centre shows the Bible, open to the Gospel of John, flanked by a cross, spears and small national flags, all held together by a ribbon carrying the motto “Dios, Patria, Libertad” – God, Fatherland, Liberty. Laurel and palm branches frame the shield, referencing peace and victory.

History of the Dominican Republic Flag

The flag dates to February 1844, when Dominican independence from Haitian rule was declared, and it was formally adopted later that same year. Juan Pablo Duarte and the Trinitarios are credited with the design, which deliberately broke from the plain blue-and-red flag used by Haiti at the time by adding the white cross. The flag has been altered slightly over the decades, chiefly in the detail of the coat of arms, but the cross-and-quarters layout has remained constant since independence. A civil version without the coat of arms is used by private citizens, while the state and war flags carry the full arms.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Dominicans fly their flag on Independence Day in February and on Restoration Day in August, among other national occasions, and government buildings are required to display it daily. As with any flag bearing a coat of arms, care should be taken to hang or print it the correct way up, since a reversed Dominican Republic flag will show the shield’s ribbon and branches back to front. The flag is a familiar sight across Dominican communities abroad as well, often flown alongside the flags of other nations at cultural events and parades.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
