About the Gabon Flag

The Gabon flag is a horizontal tricolour of green, yellow and blue, in that order from top to bottom, giving it a clean and balanced appearance. It was adopted on 9 August 1960, in the weeks leading up to Gabon’s independence from France, and the design has not changed since. Unlike many national flags, it carries no emblem or crest, relying instead on colour alone to represent the country.

Colours and Symbolism

Each band on the Gabon flag reflects a feature of the land itself. The green band represents the country’s extensive equatorial forests, which cover most of Gabon’s territory and remain central to its economy and identity. The central yellow band refers to the equator, which passes through Gabon, and to the sun that shapes its tropical climate. The blue band along the bottom stands for the Atlantic Ocean, which forms the country’s western border and has long supported fishing and trade. Read together, the three bands amount to a simple picture of the nation: forest, sun and sea.

History of the Gabon Flag

Before independence, Gabon was part of French Equatorial Africa and flew the French tricolour rather than a flag of its own. As the territory prepared for self-government in the final years of colonial rule, a distinct national flag was drawn up using colours that spoke to Gabon’s own geography rather than its ties to France. The green-yellow-blue tricolour was formally adopted shortly before independence was declared on 17 August 1960, and it has remained the national flag through every change of government since, making it one of the more stable flags on the African continent.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Gabon flag flies over government buildings, schools and courts throughout the country, and it is raised prominently during national celebrations such as Independence Day on 17 August. Convention calls for it to be flown with the green band uppermost and blue at the bottom, kept clean and undamaged when displayed outdoors. Gabonese embassies and consulates fly the flag alongside that of their host country, and it appears at sporting fixtures whenever Gabonese teams or athletes compete internationally. Its plain horizontal bands make it easy to identify at a distance, whether on a flagpole, a car flag or a badge.
