About the Guam Flag

Dark blue with a narrow red border and an oval seal at its centre, the Guam flag is the official banner of the US territory in the western Pacific. The seal shows a proa, a traditional outrigger canoe, sailing past a beach at Hagåtña, with a coconut palm, a river and a sling stone in the foreground, and the word “GUAM” printed in red across the top of the oval.

Colours and Symbolism

The blue field of the Guam flag represents the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the island, while the red border was added to commemorate the suffering and sacrifice of the Chamorro people during the Japanese occupation of Guam in the Second World War. The seal itself is a scene of everyday island life, with the proa standing for the seafaring skill of the Chamorro people and the palm and river marking the natural landscape of Hagåtña, the territory’s capital. The sling stone recalls a traditional Chamorro weapon and tool, tying the seal to the island’s pre-colonial culture.

History of the Guam Flag

The seal at the centre of the Guam flag dates back to the early twentieth century, when the island was under US naval administration, and it was chosen to give the territory a distinct visual identity separate from other American possessions. The flag built around that seal was later formally adopted as Guam’s official territorial flag, and the red border was added afterwards, in the years following the island’s liberation from Japanese occupation in 1944, as a lasting reminder of that period. The core design, blue field, oval seal and red border, has remained in place since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Guam flag is flown alongside the United States flag on government buildings, schools and at the airport, reflecting Guam’s status as an organised, unincorporated US territory. It is flown with particular prominence on Liberation Day, 21 July, which marks the island’s freedom from Japanese occupation, and on Guam’s own territorial holidays. As with most seal-based flags, care should be taken when reproducing it at small sizes, since the detail within the oval can blur if the flag is printed too small. It is a common sight on vehicles, at cultural festivals and at sporting events involving Guamanian athletes.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
