About the Hawaii Flag

Unlike most of the fifty states, the Hawaii flag predates the United States flag it now flies alongside by well over a century. It combines eight horizontal stripes with a Union Jack in the canton, a design that has stayed unchanged since it was formally unfurled in 1845 during the Kingdom of Hawaii. The result is the only US state flag to carry a foreign national emblem within its design.

Colours and Symbolism

The eight stripes alternate white, red and blue and stand for the eight main islands of the Hawaiian chain: Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. The Union Jack in the upper corner reflects the close ties King Kamehameha I built with British naval officers in the late eighteenth century, at a time when Hawaii needed powerful friends to keep rival colonial powers at bay. Rather than choosing one ally’s symbols over another, the design was said to blend British and American references so as not to offend either nation.

History of the Hawaii Flag

Versions of a combined flag flew over Hawaii from as early as the 1790s, following visits from British explorers including George Vancouver, who presented a Union Jack to Kamehameha I. The design was standardised and formally adopted on 25 May 1845 at the opening of the legislative council under the Kingdom of Hawaii. It survived the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, the short-lived republic, annexation by the United States in 1898, and territorial status, before becoming the official state flag when Hawaii joined the union in 1959. Few state flags anywhere have carried such an unbroken history through so many changes of government.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Hawaii flag is flown outside government buildings, schools and many private homes across the islands, often alongside the Stars and Stripes. Because of its royal origins, it holds a particular significance for Native Hawaiians and is sometimes flown upside down as a mark of protest connected to sovereignty movements. Standard flag etiquette applies when displaying it with the national flag – the US flag takes the position of honour, with the state flag to its own left.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
