About the Jordan Flag
A red triangle at the hoist, bearing a white seven-pointed star, sets the Jordan flag apart from the many similar Arab tricolours built from black, white and green horizontal bands. The design was born out of the Arab Revolt of the First World War and has flown over Jordan, in slightly adjusted form, since the kingdom’s earliest years.
Colours and Symbolism
The black, white and green stripes each recall a different historic Arab dynasty – black for the Abbasid Caliphate, white for the Umayyad Caliphate, and green for the Fatimid or Rashidun periods – drawing a line from Jordan’s present back through centuries of Arab and Islamic history. The red triangle stands for the Hashemite dynasty and the struggle for Arab independence. The white star has a double meaning, representing the unity of the Arab peoples while its seven points refer to the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran.
History of the Jordan Flag
The design descends directly from the flag raised during the Arab Revolt of 1916, when Hashemite leaders rallied Arab forces against Ottoman rule using the black-white-green-red combination that would later spread across several Arab states. Jordan’s own version, adding the star to the red triangle, was officially adopted on 16 April 1928, under the Emirate of Transjordan before full independence. It has remained the Jordan flag through the country’s transition to a kingdom in 1946 and every change of government since, making it one of the more consistent national flags in the modern Middle East. The same black-white-green-red combination, drawn from that shared Arab Revolt origin, can still be seen in the flags of Palestine, Sudan and several other Arab states, though each arranges the colours differently.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Jordan flag flies at government buildings, schools and border crossings throughout the country, and a large flagpole in Aqaba has at times flown one of the biggest versions of the flag in the region. National days such as Independence Day on 25 May are marked with flag displays across Jordanian cities. As with other flags carrying religious references in their symbolism, it is generally handled with particular respect during official ceremonies.
