About the Liberia Flag

The Liberia flag is easy to mistake at a glance for the flag of the United States, and that resemblance is deliberate. It has eleven horizontal stripes alternating red and white, with a blue square in the upper hoist corner containing a single white five-pointed star. It was adopted in 1847, when Liberia became Africa’s first independent republic.

Colours and Symbolism

The eleven stripes on the Liberia flag represent the eleven men who signed the country’s Declaration of Independence in 1847, rather than states or provinces as on the American flag. Red stands for courage and the sacrifice needed to build the new nation, white for moral excellence and purity of purpose, and blue for liberty, justice and fidelity to the republic’s founding ideals. The single white star in the blue canton represents Liberia’s position as the first independent republic on the African continent at the time it was founded, a status often summed up in the flag’s nickname, the Lone Star.

History of the Liberia Flag

Liberia’s founding is closely tied to the American Colonization Society, which resettled freed and formerly enslaved African Americans on the West African coast from the 1820s onward. Given that background, it is not surprising the settlers looked to the United States flag for inspiration when Liberia declared independence in 1847, though they scaled the design back from thirteen stripes and multiple stars to eleven stripes and one star to reflect their own founding history rather than borrow it wholesale. The Liberia flag has stayed essentially unchanged since then, making it one of the longer-serving national flag designs in Africa, having survived periods of civil conflict in the late twentieth century without alteration.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Liberia flag is flown on government buildings throughout the year and is central to Independence Day celebrations on 26 July, one of the most widely observed public holidays in the country. Liberian flag etiquette generally follows conventions similar to those used in the United States, including flying the flag at half-mast during periods of national mourning. Liberians living abroad often display the flag at community and cultural events as a marker of national identity.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
