Description

The Liechtenstein flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Liechtenstein Flag

The Liechtenstein flag is a horizontal bicolour of blue over red, with a gold princely crown set in the upper hoist corner. The crown is what distinguishes it from a small number of other blue-and-red flags, and it was added in 1937 for exactly that reason, after officials noticed the plain bicolour was identical to Haiti’s flag.

Colours and Symbolism

Blue on the Liechtenstein flag is usually described as representing the sky, while red represents the evening fires traditionally lit in the country’s homes and villages. The gold crown added later stands for the unity of the princely house and the people of Liechtenstein, reflecting the country’s status as one of the few remaining principalities in Europe, still ruled by a reigning prince rather than a purely ceremonial monarch. The crown is angled slightly, sitting diagonally rather than square in the corner, which gives the flag a subtle sense of movement.

History of the Liechtenstein Flag

The blue-and-red combination was adopted as the country’s colours in 1852, based on the colours used in the princely coat of arms, and it flew for decades as a plain bicolour with no other markings. The story most often told about the crown’s addition centres on the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, where the Liechtenstein delegation is said to have discovered that their flag was indistinguishable from Haiti’s.

Whatever the exact circumstances, parliament added the gold crown the following year, in 1937, giving the Liechtenstein flag a design that could not be confused with any other country’s. The basic blue-red-crown design has remained unchanged since then, making it one of the more stable flags in Europe over the past century.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Liechtenstein flag is flown from government buildings throughout the principality and is especially prominent around National Day on 15 August, when celebrations are held at Vaduz Castle and across the country. Because the flag’s identity depends on the crown being correctly proportioned and positioned, care is generally taken to reproduce it accurately rather than as a plain bicolour. Liechtenstein households commonly display the flag from windows and balconies during national celebrations.

Ordering and Delivery

Every Liechtenstein flag is printed to order and dispatched from our Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Johannesburg branches, with courier delivery nationwide. Bulk and school orders are welcome — contact us for volume pricing on quantities of 10 or more.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
