About the Lithuania Flag

The Lithuania flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, green and red, arranged in equal bands from top to bottom. It was first adopted as the state flag in 1918, when Lithuania declared independence at the end of the First World War, and it has since become one of the clearest visual markers of Lithuanian statehood.

Colours and Symbolism

Yellow on the Lithuania flag is commonly read as a symbol of the sun, light and prosperity, green for the country’s forests, countryside and hope for the future, and red for the courage and blood of those who fought and died for Lithuanian independence. Together the three colours are meant to sum up the character of the land and the people rather than reference any single historical event, which is part of why the combination has endured through very different political periods.

History of the Lithuania Flag

Before the yellow-green-red tricolour, Lithuania’s medieval and early modern rulers used a red flag bearing the Vytis, a mounted knight, a symbol that is still used today as a separate state flag alongside the tricolour. The horizontal tricolour was adopted in 1918 as the newly independent republic looked for a simpler national symbol distinct from its historical coats of arms. Lithuania lost the flag, along with its independence, when it was occupied first by the Soviet Union and then Nazi Germany during the Second World War, and again by the Soviet Union from 1944, during which time a Soviet Lithuanian flag was used instead. The Lithuania flag reappeared publicly as the independence movement grew in the late 1980s and was restored as the official state flag once Lithuania re-established its independence in 1990, with the exact legal shades of the colours confirmed by law in 2004.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Lithuania flag is flown daily on government buildings and is raised on private homes as well during major state occasions, including Restoration of Independence Day on 11 March and Statehood Day on 6 July. Lithuanian law lists specific dates on which flying the flag is compulsory for state institutions, and it also permits the tricolour to be flown alongside the historical Vytis flag on important anniversaries.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
