About the Luxembourg Flag

The Luxembourg flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and light blue, a combination that looks similar to the flag of the Netherlands at first glance but uses a noticeably paler blue and different proportions. It draws on colours that have represented the Grand Duchy since at least the mid-nineteenth century and was given formal legal status as the national flag in 1972.

Colours and Symbolism

The red, white and light blue of the Luxembourg flag come from the coat of arms of the House of Luxembourg-Nassau, which features a red-and-white striped lion on a blue field. Rather than assigning separate meanings to each colour, the flag is generally understood as a direct simplification of these heraldic colours into plain horizontal bands, linking the modern state flag to the ruling family’s historic arms. The lighter shade of blue used in the flag, compared to the darker blue of the Netherlands flag, is one of the main visual details that separates the two.

History of the Luxembourg Flag

Red, white and blue bunting in these shades was already being used by Luxembourgers during the political unrest of 1848, and the tricolour gradually became established as the national flag over the following decades without a single formal decree fixing it in place. Because it resembled the Dutch flag so closely, confusion between the two persisted for years, and Luxembourg eventually moved to clarify its own flag in law, most significantly through the law of 23 June 1972, which set out the official colours, the lighter shade of blue in particular, and the standard proportions of the flag. Since then the Luxembourg flag has been legally distinct from, though still visually similar to, its Dutch counterpart.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Luxembourg flag is flown from government buildings throughout the year and is displayed widely by residents and businesses around National Day on 23 June, the main public holiday celebrating the Grand Duke and the nation. Alongside the tricolour, Luxembourg also has a separate civil ensign, the red lion flag, which is used at sea and on some ceremonial occasions, so the two are not always interchangeable in formal settings.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
