Description

The Mali flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Mali Flag

The Mali flag is a vertical tricolour of green, gold and red, and at a glance it can be mistaken for the flag of neighbouring Guinea, which uses the same three colours in reverse order. That resemblance is no accident, since both flags draw on the pan-African colour scheme adopted by several West African states around the time of independence.

Colours and Symbolism

Green, at the hoist, represents the fertility of Mali’s land and its agricultural promise. Gold in the centre stands for the country’s mineral wealth and for purity, a nod to Mali’s history as part of the historic gold trade across the Sahara. Red, at the fly end, commemorates the blood shed in the struggle for independence from France. These three colours were shared by several newly independent West African nations in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a deliberate symbol of regional solidarity, so the Mali flag is best read as part of that wider movement as much as a purely national statement.

History of the Mali Flag

Mali’s first flag, flown from 1959 when the territory joined the short-lived Mali Federation with Senegal, carried a black kanaga figure, a stylised human form with raised arms, on the central gold stripe. When the federation broke up and Mali became independent on its own, that figure was dropped. Opposition within the country, whose population is overwhelmingly Muslim, to a human figure appearing on the national flag played a part in the change. The plain green, gold and red Mali flag was adopted on 1 March 1961 and has remained unchanged since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Mali flag is flown vertically in three equal bands, green at the hoist through to red at the fly, and this order should not be confused with Guinea’s flag, which runs red, gold and green from the hoist. It is displayed on government buildings in Bamako and across Mali’s regions, and features prominently around Independence Day on 22 September. As with several of its neighbours, it is worth checking the stripe order carefully before ordering or displaying one, since more than one West African tricolour shares this palette but not this sequence.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
