About the Marshall Islands Flag

Blue dominates the Marshall Islands flag, standing in for the vast stretch of Pacific Ocean the country’s atolls are scattered across. Two diagonal stripes, orange below and white above, rise from the lower hoist to the upper fly, widening as they go, and where they meet the upper hoist corner sits a white star with an unusually high number of points.

Colours and Symbolism

The diagonal band is often read as a line representing the equator, since the Marshall Islands sit just north of it, with the star placed above the line to mark the country’s position in the Northern Hemisphere. Orange stands for courage and for the Ralik chain of islands, while white represents peace and the Ratak chain, the two chains that together make up the country. The star on the Marshall Islands flag carries twenty-four points, one of the highest counts of any national flag, with four of those points drawn longer than the rest to mark out the four main population and cultural centres.

History of the Marshall Islands Flag

The flag was adopted on 1 May 1979, as the islands moved toward self-government after decades under United States trusteeship in the wake of the Second World War. It is credited to Emlain Kabua, wife of the country’s first president, Amata Kabua, and it replaced the flag of the wider Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands that had been used across the region. Full independence, under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, followed later in the 1980s, but the Marshall Islands flag itself has not changed since its original adoption.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown from government buildings in Majuro and across the outlying atolls, and appears at community and church gatherings as often as at official events, reflecting how central both government and custom are to daily life there. Correct orientation matters, since the star sits in the upper hoist corner with its longer points reading clearly against the blue field, and the diagonal stripes should rise from lower left to upper right when viewed from the front. It is flown especially around Constitution Day on 1 May, which also marks the anniversary of the Marshall Islands flag itself.
