Description

The Monaco flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Monaco Flag

Two horizontal bands, red above white, make up the Monaco flag, a design so plain that it is often mistaken at a distance for the flags of Indonesia or Poland, which use the same two colours in different arrangements. Monaco’s version is simple by design, stripped of the coat of arms that had appeared on earlier versions of the principality’s banner.

Colours and Symbolism

Red and white have been the heraldic colours of the House of Grimaldi, Monaco’s ruling family, since at least the fourteenth century, long before the current flag took shape. There is no separate symbolism attached to the colours beyond this dynastic link. Unlike many national flags, the Monaco flag carries no star, crescent, cross or emblem, relying entirely on the two bands and their historic association with the ruling house to identify the country.

History of the Monaco Flag

Monaco’s flags carried the full princely coat of arms for much of its history, including during periods when the principality’s independence was far from secure, such as the French annexation between 1793 and 1814. The plain red and white bicolour now in use was formally established on 4 April 1881, under Prince Charles III, when the coat of arms was dropped in favour of the simpler design. It has remained unchanged since, making the Monaco flag one of the older unaltered national flags still in use, even though the principality itself is one of the smallest sovereign states in the world.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Monaco flag is flown horizontally, red uppermost and white below, with a proportion of roughly four to five that is notably squarer than most national flags. This ratio, along with the darker shade of red Monaco uses, is one of the easiest ways to tell it apart from Indonesia’s flag, which is otherwise near-identical in colour and layout. It is flown outside the Prince’s Palace and government buildings in Monaco-Ville, and appears throughout the principality on national holidays, including the feast of Saint Devota in January and Monaco’s National Day in November. Residents and visitors alike will also see it flying from yachts in the harbour and along the streets during the Monaco Grand Prix each May, when the principality is at its busiest and most visible on the world stage.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
