About the Montserrat Flag
The Montserrat flag is a Blue Ensign, the Union Jack set in the canton on a plain blue field, with the territory’s coat of arms placed in the fly. As a British Overseas Territory flag it follows a format familiar across the Caribbean, yet the arms at its centre point to a history unlike any of its neighbours’, tracing back to the Irish settlers who reached the island in the seventeenth century.
Colours and Symbolism
The blue field and Union Jack canton mark Montserrat’s constitutional link to the United Kingdom, a pattern shared with several other British territories. The detail that sets this flag apart sits in the fly: a woman dressed in green, representing Erin, the personification of Ireland, standing beside a gold harp and holding a cross. The cross reflects Montserrat’s Christian heritage, and the way the figure grasps it is meant to show devotion rather than force. The green dress and harp together honour the Irish settlers, many originally indentured servants, who arrived on the island from 1632 onward, a detail unique to the Montserrat flag among Caribbean ensigns.
History of the Montserrat Flag
Montserrat received its own heraldic shield in 1909, but for decades this was used on paper rather than on a flag. The Blue Ensign version was only authorised for general use in 1960, after the British Leeward Islands federation dissolved and Montserrat began operating with its own local government. The design stayed largely the same until 1999, when the shield was enlarged and its plain white background was replaced with a white outline, giving the arms more presence against the blue field. That 1999 version is the Montserrat flag flown today.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Montserrat flag flies over government buildings and public institutions throughout the territory and is raised for official occasions such as National Heroes Day. As with other ensign-based flags, protocol places the Union Jack canton in the upper hoist corner, nearest the flagpole, with the coat of arms carried in the outer half of the fly. It is typically flown alongside the Union Jack itself at events where Montserrat’s status as a British Overseas Territory is being formally marked.
