About the Myanmar (Burma) Flag

The Myanmar (Burma) flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, green and red with a single white star at its centre. Introduced in 2010, it is the country’s third national flag since independence, and its plain geometric layout was a deliberate break from the more complex socialist-era design it replaced.

Colours and Symbolism

Each band carries an official meaning set out when the flag was adopted. The yellow stripe stands for solidarity among the country’s many ethnic groups, the green for peace and fertile land, and the red for courage and decisiveness. The white star at the centre is described as representing purity and the unity of the union, sitting equally over all three colours rather than favouring any one of them.

History of the Myanmar (Burma) Flag

Burma’s first independence-era flag, used from 1948, carried a red field with a blue canton holding one large star surrounded by five smaller ones, marking the country’s break from colonial rule. In 1974, under a socialist government, the flag changed again to a red field with a blue canton containing fourteen stars around a cogwheel and rice stalk, symbols of workers and farmers, with the fourteen stars representing the country’s states and divisions. Both older designs were retired on 21 October 2010, when the current Myanmar (Burma) flag was hoisted as part of a wider set of constitutional changes, including the country’s move from the name Burma to Myanmar in official use.

The flag is flown at government offices, schools and border crossings, and appears alongside regional and ethnic flags at official events across the country. Because the design is a plain tricolour with a single central star rather than a flag carrying an ensign or fine detail, it is flown the same way regardless of context, with no canton or emblem orientation to observe.
