Description

The Nauru flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Nauru Flag

The Nauru flag is about as simple as national flags get: a blue field crossed by a narrow gold stripe, with a white twelve-pointed star sitting just below it. Adopted on 31 January 1968, the same day Nauru became independent, it packs the geography and history of this small Pacific island into three basic shapes, with nothing added purely for decoration.

Colours and Symbolism

The blue field represents the Pacific Ocean that surrounds Nauru on all sides. The gold stripe running across the flag marks the Equator, and its position is not decorative: Nauru sits just one degree south of the line, so the star beneath the stripe is placed to show the island’s actual location relative to it. The star stands for Nauru itself, and its white colour is usually linked to phosphate, the mineral that was once the backbone of the island’s economy. Its twelve points represent the twelve original tribes of Nauru, giving the Nauru flag a direct link to the island’s own clan structure.

History of the Nauru Flag

Before independence, Nauru was administered first by Germany, then by Australia under a League of Nations and later United Nations mandate, and it flew the flags of those administering powers rather than one of its own. The current Nauru flag was designed for the transition to self-rule and adopted on the day independence was declared in 1968. Unlike many former colonies, Nauru has not revised or replaced its flag since, so the same design has now represented the country, through changing governments and economic fortunes, for well over half a century.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Nauru flag flies over parliament and government buildings and is raised for Independence Day and other national occasions. Because the design relies on a thin stripe and a small multi-pointed star rather than large blocks of colour, the star’s twelve points and its position relative to the gold stripe are the details most likely to be lost when the flag is reproduced poorly. Displayed correctly, the star sits just south of the stripe, matching Nauru’s own position just south of the Equator.

Ordering and Delivery

Every Nauru flag is printed to order and dispatched from our Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Johannesburg branches, with courier delivery nationwide. Bulk and school orders are welcome — contact us for volume pricing on quantities of 10 or more.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
