About the North Korea Flag

The North Korea flag, formally known as the flag of the red colour, is built around a broad red band edged in thin white and blue stripes, with a white disc bearing a red star set near the hoist. Adopted in 1948 when the state was founded, it replaced the traditional Korean taegukgi and remains one of the most recognisable communist-era flag designs still in official use.

Colours and Symbolism

State explanations describe the red field as recalling the sacrifice of Korean patriots and the strength of the people, while the narrow white stripes stand for purity and for the single Korean nation. The blue bands at the top and bottom edges are linked to a commitment to peace and to solidarity with other nations. The red star within the white disc is a standard socialist symbol, marking the political system that the North Korea flag has represented without interruption since 1948.

History of the North Korea Flag

Korea’s older national flag, the taegukgi, dates back to the 1880s and combines a red-and-blue yin-yang circle with four black trigrams on a white field; it had represented Korea through the period of Japanese occupation. When the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was established in the northern half of the peninsula, its first Supreme People’s Assembly adopted the current North Korea flag on 8 September 1948, deliberately breaking from the older Korean symbol to mark the new state’s political direction. South Korea continued to use a version of the taegukgi, which is why the two Koreas have flown visibly different flags since division.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The North Korea flag is flown at government buildings, official events and state ceremonies throughout the country, and its display is closely tied to state protocol. Correct orientation keeps the red star and white disc near the hoist, with the horizontal bands running the full width of the flag above and below the wide red field. Outside the country, the flag is generally recognised as the national flag of North Korea in international contexts such as sporting events and diplomatic settings.
