History of the Flag
The flag of Norway was officially adopted on July 13, 1821 , following a design competition initiated by the Norwegian Parliament. The winning design was submitted by Frederik Meltzer , a member of the parliament.
Symbols and Colours
The Norway flag consists of a red field, charged with a navy blue Scandinavian cross outlined in white that extends to the edges of the field . The vertical part of the cross is shifted towards the hoist side in the style of the Nordic cross. The red and blue colours are influenced by the flags of France, the United States, and the United Kingdom, symbolising liberty and independence. The white and blue cross represents Norway's commitment to peace and its maritime history.
The Country's National Anthem
Norway's national anthem is titled "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" or "Yes, we love this country" . Written by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and composed by his cousin Rikard Nordraak , the anthem is a melodic ode to the country's beautiful landscapes, and a tribute to the spirit of its people.
Flag Protocol
The Norway flag should always be treated with respect. It is customarily flown from sunrise to sunset, and must not touch the ground or water beneath. The flag is flown on public buildings, during national holidays, and on private properties during special occasions.
Evolution of the Flag
The design of the Norway flag has not changed since its official adoption in 1821. The consistent design signifies Norway's steadfast national identity and enduring pride.
