Description

The Oman flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Oman Flag

The Oman flag combines a vertical white, green and red stripe pattern at the hoist with a broad red field bearing the national emblem in the upper corner. Its current form dates from 1970, when Sultan Qaboos bin Said took power and replaced the plain red flag that had represented the country and its sultans for generations before then.

Colours and Symbolism

White is traditionally associated with peace and with the historic office of the Imam, while green is often linked to the Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountains in the country’s north. Red is the colour long used on Omani banners and remains common across the flags of the Gulf region, tying the Oman flag visually to its neighbours even as its specific design stands apart. In the upper corner sits Oman’s national emblem, a khanjar, the traditional curved dagger worn by Omani men, positioned in its sheath above two crossed swords and joined by an ornamental belt, a badge with roots in the heraldry of the ruling Al Said dynasty.

History of the Oman Flag

Before 1970, Oman flew a plain red flag with no emblem, a design used for generations by the country’s rulers and its people. When Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970, the current Oman flag, with its tricolour stripes and khanjar emblem, was introduced as part of a wider modernisation of the country’s symbols and institutions. The flag’s proportions were later adjusted twice, changing from 3:4 to 1:2 in 1995 and then to 4:7 in 2004, while the colours and emblem themselves have stayed the same since 1970.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Oman flag is flown at government buildings, ports and diplomatic missions, and is raised in large numbers around National Day on 18 November, which also marks the late Sultan Qaboos’s birthday. Correct display keeps the emblem and the vertical stripe band at the hoist, with the red field extending across the rest of the flag. The khanjar emblem carries enough fine detail that it is normally rendered as a discrete badge on printed and embroidered versions alike, rather than simplified.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
