About the Scotland (Lion Rampant) Flag

The Lion Rampant flag, formally known as the Royal Banner of Scotland, is one of the most recognisable Scottish symbols, though it is a different flag from the blue and white Saltire that represents the country officially. Where the Saltire is Scotland’s national flag, the Lion Rampant flag is the royal standard, showing a rearing red lion on a gold field, and it has long been associated with the Scottish crown rather than the state itself.

Colours and Symbolism

The design shows a red lion rampant, meaning it stands upright on its hind legs, with blue claws and tongue, set on a bright yellow or gold background. Around the edge runs a double border decorated with facing pairs of fleur-de-lis, known in heraldry as a double tressure flory counter-flory. The lion has represented Scottish royal authority for centuries, and the tressure border is thought to reflect old ties between the Scottish and French crowns. Together the elements form one of the oldest heraldic banners still in regular use anywhere in the world.

History of the Scotland Flag (Lion Rampant)

The lion rampant emerged as a royal emblem in the thirteenth century, during the reign of Alexander II, with the decorative tressure border added under Alexander III not long after. It served as the personal banner of the Scottish monarch and remained in that role until the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when Scotland and England came under one monarch and the banner was folded into later royal standards used across Britain. Despite this long royal history, use of the Lion Rampant flag is not free for anyone to claim. It is protected under the Parliament of Scotland Act of 1672 and the Lyon King of Arms Act of 1867, and the Court of the Lord Lyon has previously raised objections to its use by organisations, including football clubs and political parties, without permission.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

In practice, the legal restriction is rarely enforced against ordinary supporters, and the Lion Rampant flag is flown widely at sporting events, Highland games and Scottish cultural gatherings, often alongside or instead of the Saltire. Strictly speaking, official use is reserved for the monarch and royal residences, so anyone buying one for personal display is doing so as a show of national pride and heritage rather than a formal claim to royal status. As with any flag, it looks best flown the right way up, with the lion facing the hoist, and kept away from damp storage that can fade the strong red and gold colours the design depends on.
