About the Seychelles Flag

Few national flags move like the Seychelles flag. Five bold colours burst out from the bottom corner of the pole in diagonal bands, a design chosen specifically to suggest energy and forward motion rather than the static horizontal or vertical stripes most countries use. It has flown over the archipelago since 1996 and remains one of the more distinctive flags in the Indian Ocean region.

Colours and Symbolism

Reading from the flagpole outward, the bands run blue, yellow, red, white and green. Blue represents the sky and the sea surrounding the 115 islands of Seychelles. Yellow stands for the sun that gives light and life to the country. Red symbolises the people and their determination to work together for the future. White represents social justice and harmony, and green depicts the land and its natural environment. The diagonal, radiating layout was a deliberate choice by designer Philip Uzice to convey a dynamic, forward-looking nation rather than a fixed set of ideals, which is part of what makes the Seychelles flag stand out among its neighbours.

History of the Seychelles Flag

Seychelles has used several flags since gaining independence from Britain in 1976. The first post-independence flag combined red, white and green with a coconut palm badge, and a later design from 1977 used red, white and green in a fixed layout tied to the colours of the ruling party at the time. The current Seychelles flag was adopted on 8 January 1996, replacing that earlier design as part of a broader shift toward multi-party democracy in the country during the 1990s. The new design deliberately moved away from party colours toward a broader set of national values, which is why it carries five colours rather than the previous three.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Seychelles flag is flown at government buildings across the islands and features prominently during national celebrations such as Independence Day on 29 June and Constitution Day on 18 June. Because the diagonal bands run from the lower hoist to the upper fly, the flag must be hung the correct way round for the design to read properly; turned the wrong way, the sequence of colours reverses and no longer matches the official pattern. It is a flag that works well both on a pole, where the wind catches the diagonal lines effectively, and mounted flat, where the radiating bands still give a strong sense of movement.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
