About the Singapore Flag

Singapore’s flag pairs a strong red and white design with a crescent moon and five small stars, a combination chosen carefully to represent a young, multicultural nation at the point of self-government. The Singapore flag has flown in its current form since 1959, making it one of the more settled flags in Southeast Asia, with no changes since its adoption despite the country’s rapid transformation over the following decades.

Colours and Symbolism

The flag is divided into two equal horizontal bands, red above white. Red stands for universal brotherhood and equality among people, while white represents purity and virtue that the nation aims to hold onto. In the upper hoist corner sits a white crescent moon alongside five white stars arranged in a circle. The crescent represents a young nation on the rise, and the five stars stand for democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality, the ideals set out for the new state at the time of self-government. The crescent also carries meaning for Singapore’s Muslim community, while the choice of five stars was intended to reflect wider aspirations shared across the population rather than any single group.

History of the Singapore Flag

The design was created by a government committee led by then deputy prime minister Toh Chin Chye, working over roughly two months before its adoption on 3 December 1959, when Singapore achieved self-government under British rule. At the time, red and white were already closely tied to Malay identity in the region, so the choice was partly about signalling continuity as well as unity. When Singapore became fully independent in August 1965, following a brief period as part of Malaysia, the same flag was carried forward without alteration, a decision that reflected how well established the design had already become in just a few years.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Singapore flag is flown at government buildings year-round and appears widely across the country in the lead-up to National Day on 9 August, when private households and businesses are also encouraged to display it. Local guidelines set out how the flag should be hung, generally with the crescent and stars in the upper hoist corner regardless of whether the flag is flown vertically or horizontally. Outside Singapore, the flag is a common sight at cultural events and among the Singaporean diaspora, where it is usually flown alongside the flags of other nations rather than as a standalone display.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
