About the Solomon Islands Flag

A single yellow diagonal stripe splits the Solomon Islands flag into two triangles, one blue and one green, with five white stars grouped near the pole. Adopted in the lead-up to independence in 1977, the design was created to represent the islands’ geography rather than any political movement, which gives it a simpler, more literal story than many national flags.

Colours and Symbolism

Blue fills the upper triangle and stands for the water that surrounds and connects the islands, from ocean to rivers and rainfall. Green fills the lower triangle and represents the land itself, along with its forests and crops. Between them runs a narrow yellow stripe, standing for the sun and marking the line where sea meets land. The five white stars, arranged in the shape of an X, originally represented the five provinces that existed in the Solomon Islands at independence. The country now has more provinces than that, but the number of stars on the flag has never been increased, so today they are best understood as a nod to the original provinces rather than a literal count of the current ones.

History of the Solomon Islands Flag

Before independence, the islands flew flags associated with British colonial administration, as the territory had been a British protectorate since the late nineteenth century. The current design was chosen ahead of independence and formally adopted on 18 November 1977, with independence itself following in July 1978. It is credited to a New Zealand teacher working at a school in Honiara at the time, whose design was selected during the search for a national flag. Unlike some Pacific flags that have gone through several redesigns, the Solomon Islands flag has stayed exactly as it was first adopted.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Solomon Islands flag is flown at government offices and public buildings across the archipelago and is especially visible during Independence Day celebrations on 7 July. Because the design relies on a diagonal stripe running from the lower hoist to the upper fly, it needs to be hung the right way round, otherwise the blue and green triangles swap places and the stars end up on the wrong side. The bold, simple shapes in the design mean it reads clearly at a distance, whether flown from a tall pole or displayed on a smaller flag indoors.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
