About the St Lucia Flag

The St Lucia flag stands out for showing an actual landmark rather than an abstract emblem: a stylised image of the Pitons, the island’s twin volcanic peaks, rising from the sea against a cyan blue background. Designed by the St Lucian artist Dunstan St Omer, it has represented the island since well before full independence and remains one of the more visually literal national flags in the Caribbean.

Colours and Symbolism

The blue field represents the sky and the surrounding waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, which meet around St Lucia’s coastline. Rising from the base of the flag is a gold triangle, standing for sunshine and the prosperity the island hopes to achieve, with a black triangle edged in white set just behind it. Together the shapes form the outline of the Pitons, and the black and white sections are understood to represent the harmonious relationship between the island’s Black and white communities living side by side. It is a design built almost entirely around symbols that St Lucians can point to on their own coastline, which is part of why the St Lucia flag has stayed so closely tied to national identity.

History of the St Lucia Flag

The flag was adopted on 1 March 1967, when St Lucia became a self-governing state in association with Britain, some years before full independence. When independence arrived on 22 February 1979, the same overall design was kept, though the shade of blue and the proportions of the triangles were adjusted slightly to the versions still used today. Dunstan St Omer, who designed the original flag, went on to become one of St Lucia’s best-known artists, and his connection to the flag remains a point of national pride. Unlike many Caribbean flags from the same era, the St Lucia flag has never needed a full redesign, only these minor refinements.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The St Lucia flag is flown at government buildings throughout the island and features heavily during Independence Day celebrations on 22 February. Given the detail in the triangular Piton design, it benefits from being flown at a reasonably large size so the layered shapes remain distinct rather than blurring together, particularly from a distance. As with most flags built around directional shapes, it should be hung the right way up, with the peaks of the Pitons pointing upward from the base of the flag rather than inverted.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
