About the Suriname Flag

The Suriname flag combines five horizontal bands of green, white and red with a single yellow star at its centre, a design adopted when the country left Dutch colonial rule behind. It is flown across this South American nation on the northern edge of the continent, from the capital Paramaribo to the interior river settlements. Unlike many national flags in the region, its layout owes little to older colonial banners.

Colours and Symbolism

Reading from top to bottom, the bands run green, white, red, white and green, with the red band by far the widest and running through the centre of the flag. Green represents hope and the fertility of the land, white stands for justice and freedom, and red for progress and the love the people hold for their country. At the centre sits a large yellow five-pointed star, said to symbolise the unity of Suriname’s different ethnic groups, among them Creole, Hindustani, Javanese, Maroon and Indigenous communities, as well as a golden future for the young nation.

History of the Suriname Flag

Before independence, Suriname flew a flag introduced in 1959 featuring a white field with a palm branch and five stars representing the same ethnic groups later folded into the single star design. When Suriname became independent from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975, the current Suriname flag was raised for the first time, replacing the palm-branch design entirely. The five-band, single-star layout was chosen to move away from a flag seen as tied too closely to the colonial era, while keeping the idea of national unity that the earlier stars had represented.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Suriname flag is flown year-round at government offices and is especially prominent around Independence Day on 25 November, when streets in Paramaribo fill with the green, white and red colours. Correct display keeps the star centred and upright in the red band, with the wider green bands at top and bottom. Given Suriname’s mix of cultures and languages, the flag is one of the few symbols shared without dispute across the country’s communities, and it appears widely at sporting events and national holidays.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
