About the Tajikistan Flag

The Tajikistan flag is a red, white and green tricolour set apart by a gold crown and an arc of seven stars placed in its broad central band. It has flown over this mountainous Central Asian republic since shortly after independence from the Soviet Union, replacing the plain red banner used under Soviet rule. The design draws on Persian and Tajik cultural symbolism rather than the hammer-and-sickle imagery it succeeded.

Colours and Symbolism

The flag has three horizontal bands: a narrower red band at the top, a wide white band through the middle, and a narrower green band at the bottom. Red is generally read as a symbol of the sovereignty and unity of the Tajik people, white for purity and for the country’s cotton industry, and green for the fertility of the land and its agriculture. Centred in the white band is a gold crown topped by an arc of seven five-pointed stars, a motif with roots in Persian art and literature, where the crown and stars together are taken to represent the sovereignty, culture and friendship of the Tajik nation.

History of the Tajikistan Flag

During the Soviet era, the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic flew a red flag bearing a hammer and sickle, with a blue stripe added in a later version. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union and Tajikistan’s declaration of independence in 1991, the country adopted the current red, white and green Tajikistan flag on 24 November 1992, in the midst of the civil war that followed independence. The crown and stars emblem was designed to give the new flag a distinctly Tajik identity, separate from both the Soviet symbols it replaced and the flags of neighbouring Central Asian states.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Tajikistan flag is flown at government buildings across the country and is raised prominently during national holidays such as Independence Day on 9 September. A large flagpole in the capital, Dushanbe, has at times been cited among the tallest in the world, reflecting the importance placed on the flag as a symbol of the young republic. Correct display keeps the crown and stars centred in the white band and upright, with the red band at the top.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
