About the Tunisia Flag
The Tunisia flag is a red field centred on a white disc containing a red crescent and five-pointed star, one of the older continuously used flag designs in North Africa. It has represented Tunisia, in one form or another, since well before the country’s independence from France, making it one of the more historically layered flags on the continent.
Colours and Symbolism
Red dominates the flag, filling the field around a white circle set toward the centre, itself containing a red crescent moon and a red five-pointed star. Red is generally associated with the blood shed by those who died for the country, while the white circle is linked to peace. The crescent and star are shared symbols across much of the Islamic world and are widely read here as representing Islam and unity, while the white disc has also been described as a stylised sun, a detail that sets the Tunisia flag apart from similar Ottoman-influenced designs used elsewhere.
History of the Tunisia Flag
The design is traditionally traced to 1831, when Hussein II, the Ottoman-era Bey of Tunis, introduced a flag for use at sea that echoed the Ottoman flag’s crescent and star while reversing the colours onto a red field. Tunisia kept this flag through the period of the French protectorate, from 1881 until independence in 1956, and it was carried forward as the national flag once the country became a republic. The Tunisia flag’s proportions and exact specifications were formally set out in law in 1999, tidying up a design that had existed in slightly varying forms for well over a century.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Tunisia flag is flown at government buildings, schools and ports across the country, and is raised prominently on Independence Day on 20 March and Republic Day on 25 July. It is displayed with the white disc, crescent and star centred and upright, and appears widely at football matches and other national events, where supporters wear and wave it in large numbers. Because of its long history, the flag is closely tied to Tunisian identity across the political changes the country has been through since independence.

Order Lead Times
Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.
One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.
Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
