About the Vietnam Flag

A plain red field with a single gold star at its centre, the Vietnam flag is one of the simplest and most striking national flags in Southeast Asia. It first appeared during the Cochinchina uprising in November 1940 and was formally adopted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on 2 September 1945, the day independence was declared. Following reunification, the Vietnam flag became the symbol of the whole country on 2 July 1976.

Colours and Symbolism

The red background of the Vietnam flag is generally described as standing for revolution and the bloodshed of those who fought for the country’s independence. The gold five-pointed star at the centre represents the soul of the nation, with the colour itself tied to Vietnamese ethnic identity. Each of the star’s five points is commonly said to stand for a different group within Vietnamese society: intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs and soldiers, reflecting an idea of national unity across different walks of life.

History of the Vietnam Flag

The design has gone through several small adjustments since it first appeared in 1940. Ho Chi Minh signed the decree formally adopting the flag for the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, and in November 1955 the points of the star were straightened slightly to give the design a cleaner, more geometric look. For three decades the flag represented North Vietnam specifically, flying alongside the different flag used in the south. After reunification in 1975 and the formal establishment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976, the red flag with its gold star became the flag of the entire country, a status it has held ever since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Vietnam flag is flown at a standard 2:3 ratio and appears across government buildings, schools and homes, especially around national holidays such as Reunification Day on 30 April and National Day on 2 September. The design’s simplicity, a single star on a plain field, makes it easy to reproduce accurately at almost any size, from small desk flags to large outdoor versions. As with most national flags, it should be displayed the right way up, with the star centred, and treated with the same care given to any national symbol.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
