About the Bermuda Flag

The Bermuda flag follows the pattern of a British Red Ensign, a solid red field with the Union Jack set in the upper canton, but distinguishes itself with a coat of arms placed on the fly. It is one of several British Overseas Territory ensigns that share this basic layout, yet its central emblem, a red lion holding a shield showing a shipwreck, makes it instantly identifiable as belonging to Bermuda rather than to any other territory.

Colours and Symbolism

The Union Jack in the canton of the Bermuda flag signals the territory’s constitutional link to the United Kingdom, a relationship that has continued since Bermuda’s settlement in the early seventeenth century. On the red field sits the Bermuda coat of arms, showing a red lion holding a white shield on which the ship Sea Venture is depicted wrecked among rocks, a reference to the 1609 shipwreck that led to the island’s first permanent English settlement. The red background of the flag matches the red field used across many British maritime ensigns of the period.

History of the Bermuda Flag

Bermuda’s coat of arms dates back to the early seventeenth century, granted not long after the island was settled following the wreck of the Sea Venture. The flag combining that coat of arms with a Red Ensign background was formally adopted in 1910, replacing earlier, less standardised colonial flags. Since then the Bermuda flag has remained essentially unchanged, even as Bermuda’s constitutional relationship with Britain evolved through the twentieth century toward its current status as a self-governing British Overseas Territory.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Bermuda flag is flown on government buildings and by many private citizens throughout the territory, and it is a common sight on Bermuda Day each May. Because the design is based on the Red Ensign, a category of flag with its own maritime conventions, it is traditionally flown ashore rather than at sea by private vessels, which more commonly fly a separate Bermuda maritime flag. As with other ensigns of its type, the Union Jack element should always sit correctly in the canton, never inverted.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
